Taskbar Icon Issue (repost)

Did you rt.clk on the clock, Customise notifications & set those ones to
'always show'?
 
BTW, re-posting in 14 minutes is asking a bit much - some people do work &
sleep.

hide unused icons. So the reason some icons are disappearing might be that
you haven't used them for a long time and Windows has decided that they
should be hidden. To check this option:
right-click the Taskbar
select Properties
clear the check box Hide inactive icons

If this isn't the cause of the problem, then Microsoft's recommendation is
to select "Lock the taskbar". It didn't work for us, though.

Doesn't work for me either. Nor does the stuff at Kelly's page. The only
advice that's worked so far is the only-temporarily-workable
Logoff-Login-after-getting-to-desktop method. When is this bug going to be
fixed?

Hey David where is it you think you are?

Everyone here is a volunteer. This isn't your own private paid for tech

Yet another new suggestion, heck I'll try just about anything to fix this,
though I don't understand what disabling uPnP detection across the LAN has
to do with [1] Icons appearing, disappearing, hiding, not hiding, and
refusing to appear as set, or [2] Toolbar disappearance from the desktop
with Quick Start deselection. [1] is workaroundable with the Logoff-login.
[2]'s solution seems to elude everyone so far.

From the below url, "When SSDP Discovery service is disabled, new devices on
the network cannot be found automatically."

Are there any other interesting side-effects to this besides my network
printer disappearing? Thanks.
 
Don't know the technical reason for this. But, I haven't noticed any
side-effects of disabling the Service, in my SoHo.

Do you have a printer that's attached on the LAN as opposed to a LPT port?

I am having an issue when I boot up where only the Networking
Notification Icons are shown. I am supposed to be having:

2 Networking Icons
2 shield icons (One ISS and one Mcafee.)
A Device Removal Icon
2 HP Printer Icons
A Logitech Webcam Icon
A Sound Icon
A Dell Quickset Icon

To restore some of them I have to go into Taskmanager, Kill
Explorer.exe,
and go to file->run and restart explorer.exe

To restore all of them I have to reboot several times, and even then
it only
shows them 25% of the boots.

Anyone seen this before? Any Clues?

P.S. No, as you can see in the following picture, the little
left-arrow
icon is not there hiding some of them.

Yes, I have in the USB port, and shared in the network. Other machines in
the network use this printer.

Following up one of the links given earlier, I tried the following and
it seems to work for me:

Open up administrative tools, select services and double-click SSDP
Discovery Service.
Select the Logon tab, select Local System Account and check Allow
service to interact with desktop. OK out and restart.

Addon:

From posting on "microsoft.beta.microsoft_update.general" I have determined
this to be true: (At least to the best of my knowledge.)

1.) This issue affects only Windows XP SP2
2.) This occurs regardless of beta status.
3.) This is not a "Once in a blue moon" issue.
4.) Log off and logging back in is a workaround.
5.) Rebooting has an approx. 25% chance of fixing the issue.
6.) This affects ANY system tray Icons that are set to start within the
first minute or two of boot.
7.) MOST of the time, networking icons appear regardless of if any others
do.
 
I reposted because the server deleted it, i witnessed it doing it. Im not
reposting because of a lack of response. (As you can see the other didn't
appear. Or if it did for you, disjoin and re-join and it wont be there.)
