Taskbar doubled up

On my XP PC, the taskbar refuses to go back to a single line. Even
with only Launch items on the left and Tray items on the right (no
minimised buttons in the middle), it still stays double. It's as if
the tray area has become double-decker somehow.

After much googling still haven't found the fix. I have seen some
'scripts' for restoring 'default taskbar', but I'm nervous of losing
my careful setup.

This can happen if you have Quick Launch enabled and the right border of
Quick Launch has gotten pushed too far over. Look at the bottom of the
"fat" taskbar for the separator's vertical line. Drag it up to the top
part of the taskbar, "shortening" the length of the Quick Launch
toolbar.

Right-click an empty area of the taskbar. If there is a checkmark
beside the "Lock the Taskbar" line, then click that line. That will
unlock the taskbar. Now, grab the top edge of the taskbar with your
mouse and make it the size you want. After you finish, you might want
to lock it again to make sure it stays that way.

Thanks, happily that was what I somehow ended up doing!

Thanks, but that was first thing I tried. I could increase the size
but not decrease it. (I don't lock the taskbar BTW, as sometimes I
*do* want to increase its depth.)

However, as you've probably now seen from my reply to Malke, I did
stumble on a sequence of manoeuvres that got it back to one line.
There was (at some point) a vertical handle in the unwanted empty area
on the extreme left, underneath the Quick Launch icons, and I found I
could drag that to the right and *up* one line.

This can happen if the faint hatched handle that should be right of the
Quick Launch buttons gets dragged too far right and jumps down to make a
lower level. Look for it under the right end of 'Start' and drag it
right and up to just after the QL icons, and things should jump back

Spot on, Alex, thanks. Discovered it an hour or so later.
