Taskbar auto-hide problem

I am using Windows XP with service pack 3. Frequently the taskbar does
not auto-hide when it should, which is very annoying.

How can I correct this problem?
 
Don't set it to Auto-hide. I find autohide to be counterproductive, and
simply moved the taskbar to the side to get more vertical desktop space.

Thanks, but I want to use auto-hide and have it work reliably. Can this
be done?

Only by removing any interfering software or utilities you have installed.
