Task Manager

My system has been acting up lately. I have done virus
scans both with McAfee and PC Cilion and have found
nothing. System is very slow and at times is not able
to "find" programs,, such as the internet.. Yahoo etc.

My task manager now has numerous "processes" running,
most of which I have no idea what are. A freind said
that all these processes that are continuing to
run "behind the scenes" are what is messing my system up.

Does anyone know how you determine what the process are
that are running?? And how you determine which ones are
needed?
