Task Manager will not stay open

I cannot get Task manager to appear.
I press crtl/alt/delete and the icon appears in the
status bar on the bottom LHS, but as soon as I click on
the icon, or anything else it disappears. I can have
many of these icons open, but cannot actually view task
manager.
I have had this problem since I got the PC, it is a XP
Athlon 2800+
Help! I would like to actually use this funtion!

Hi Rose,

Several different viruses can cause this behavior. Have you run an updated
scan with your antivirus software yet?

W32.spybot worm disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:

The same symptom is caused due to Klez, Yaha Viruses. It is advisable to run
a full system scan. Be sure you update the anti-virus software definitions.

Rose,
I had the same problem. The only fix I found is to
manually start the taskmgr.exe utility (I put a shortcut
on my desktop).
On my PC the taskmgr.exe program was in the:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder
