Task manager disappears

G

Gern Blanston

Greetings.

I'm running into a strange problem that at first I
attributed to a virus. One of my users (Win2K Pro, SP4,
current patches as of 9/18/03, 256MB RAM) is experiencing
intermittent but lengthy system pauses. I sat down at the
PC to check it out, brought up task manager and two
seconds later it disappeared. Tried this several times,
always with the same result.

Checking DEJA I found references to several viruses (Klez,
Yaha, and one other whose name escapes me at the moment).
I ran Symantecs clean tool for each of them, along with
doing a full system scan with the most current AV
definition files, all reported no viruses.

I've reinstalled SP4 and run the Windows update again, and
I still can't get the task manager to stay up for more
than a second.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi.

I've hit the same exact problem. I have Win2000 Pro SP4 with Norton
Antivirus running all the time. and i used the special Virus Removal
tool for Klez, which reported no virus on my system.

So..i still can't get Task Manager to stay on the screen for more than
2 seconds.

Any sugestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Carl

Greetings --

Are you sure that your NAV virus definitions are current?

This behavior is a common symptom of more than one virus/worm, the
three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha

I had the same problem. In my case, it turned out to be a virus.
Here's what I did. You can try it, hope it helps. As always, YMMV.

Here goes:
1. Copy taskmgr.exe and regedit.exe to MY Documents

2. RENAME them taskmgr.COM and regedit.COM

3. RUN Taskmgr.COM. it should work ok now.

4. IN Proceeses, find Winlodr.scr (or something like that) and KILL
IT.

5. in c:\winnt\system32 find winlodr.scr and DELETE it.

6. EMPTY the recyle bin Right Away.

7. Run Regedit

8 find and DELETE all keys that reference winlodr.scr

9 Reboot.

10 do the ctrl-alt.del thing and make sure regular Task manager works
ok

This is a bad virus. it got thru my firewall and past norton antivirus
2003.

good luck
