task bar icons suddenly missing

Running XP Pro with all updates. Today (and 3 or 4 times in the past 2
years) all my program icons on the left side of the task bar are gone. Quick
start icons on the right are unaffected. I run Zone Alarm too. I had the
feeling the last time this happened was after an automatic update from MS.
Any suggestions about what might be happening and how it might be prevented?

Traditionally, the Quick Launch (you said quick start) icons are located on
the left of the taskbar, the icons for open programs are located in the
center and the system tray icons are located on the right by the clock.
Which ones are missing?

Hi Brian,

You stated that all of them are missing, so you really mean that the QL bar
is gone.

Either way, once you have the QL bar and icons back on run line 54 (save
settings on exit): http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If this is not the case and you cannot add it back, run line 164:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

I also have a stand alone exe for the QL bar if needed.
