Park volume icon in task bar

The volume control icon suddenly disapeared from the running
programs in my task bar. I went to task bar settings &
marked it to "always shown" but it does not come up any more
on re-boot. Is there another way I may be able to force it
into the task bar permanently. Also I have a windows
messenger icon that continues to show in the task bar even
after several attempts to turn it off. Help in removing this
from the task bar would be appreciated.
Thanks

Got a chance to read most of the MANY threads concerning the
task bar snafu's & at least I am assured it is a wiindows bug
& not something I did wrong. Did use a couple of work
arounds suggested in the links you posted & they both seem to
work to a degree. Disabling Norton AV to load w\ windows
loads the icons correctly on boot. However I then have to
manually restart NAV. The other solution is to kill the
explorer.exe process from the task manager after the initial
boot then restart it from the run prompt. All the desired
icons magically appear w\ the new desktop after the restart.
Thanks again for the links & help

Gave it a try. Didn't see a difference. Problem seems to be a
conflict w\ Norton AV. Thanks for the link.

Actually found a checkbox for messenger available in add
\remove portion of control panel. Had alreday tried
unchecking the box on msconfig\startup to no avail cause it
re-entered itself on reboot. Unchecking it in the add\remove
program area killed it for good. Wish I had looked for it
there in the first place. Thanks to all for the links &
suggestions.
