Missing task bar icons.

Several applications I have set to startup during WinXP startup/boot, do not
have the associated task bar icons, that existed until recently. The
applications are running as shown by task manager processes. The task bar
options are not set to hide any icons.
Is this a registry issue? That is, there a registry entry that for some
reason has been removed, or corrupted, that determines if the running
programs/applications desired icon is shown in the task bar or not?
Can anyone direct me to any relevant knowledge base citations describing how
to fix this problem?
Any comments in reply are requested.
TIA

You mean their icon is not displaying on the right side of the taskbar, in
the section called the notification area (commonly called the system tray)?

From Start | Run | Services.msc disable either the SSDP Discovery Service or
the UPnP Service (not needed unless you have UPnP devices) or both, and see
if that helps.

Right click a blank spot on the taskbar and choose Properties. Down on the
bottom click Customize near Hide inactive icons. Find the icons you're
interested in, click in the right column, and choose the behavior you want
with the down arrow.

Yes, missing from the notification area.

As clarified in the answer, the icons that are missing are normally in the
notification box at the right end of the task bar.
Following your direction, I find that the "Customize" button is greyed out.

Yes, I disabled SSDP and Upnp services, just now rebooted OS, and the icons
have been restored to the notification box. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your suggestion Frank! I appreciate the effort you made to assist
me.

The suggestion from "Rock", recommending disabing the SSDP and UPnP
services, successfully restored the missing icons to the notifications box.

This obvious solution never seems to work. Isn't it about time the morons at
uSoft fixed this bug?
