I have had on the bottom of my computer screen for a number of years a Task
Bar about 7mm high with various icons on it. Suddenly for no reason a second
task bar has appeered below it which shows the programmes I have open as I
work. This information used to appear on the first task bar at the right hand
end near to the clock 'box'. Help please, how do I get rid of this new Task
Bar and revert to just having one on my screen.

No, it's not a "second" task bar. You still have one task bar, but
it's now two lines high, instead of one. Some people (me, for example)
like it that way.

The task bar is resizable, like a window. Put the cursor on the edge
and make it turn into a double-headed arrow. Then click and drag it to
the size you want.

If it won't resize, it may be locked. In that case, right click on it
and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar," Then try again.

Also note that if you have toolbars on the task bar on multiple lines,
you won't be able to reduce the task bar size to fewer than that
number of lines. Put all the toolbars on one line first.

First right-click the Taskbar, click "Lock the Taskbar" if it's checked.
That will un-check it and allow it to be resized.

If your Quick Launch or another Toolbar is on the top line and the
Running Tasks display is on the second line, click the vertical divider
to the left of the Running Tasks bar, and drag it to the right, then up
and down till you have all the Quick Launch Toolbar on the two rows on
the left and the tasks on the right. Then you can hover over the top of
the bar where the pointer changes to the Resize pointer, click and drag
downwards to resize the Taskbar. Lock it so it won't move on you.
