Hi, The problem is that my taskbar, quick launch, start menu and everything
at the bottom of the screen freezes. I can move the cursor round the screen
but cannot start any applications, I get an error message. CTRL ALT DEL
brings up the task manager and although I can stop applications that are
running they do not move from the task bar.If I try to close the machine it
just sits there after a couple of such and such is not responding, close
now? messages. I have to do a finger on the button power down. It all
started about a week after I cloned my C drive with Acronis true image 9 and
put it onto a 250gig hard drive from my old 32gig drive. I have cleaned the
old drive after all seemed to be OK after a few days. But then it just
started this freezing, it will run for 2 days without problem, ( I leave the
machine on 24 hours a day) then might freeze twice in a day? Usually it goes
haywire whilst the screen saver is on, the indication that all is not well
is that the clock stops when it freezes so I know when it happens but there
is no common element although the machine has internet access at all times
via my router. I have checked for viruses and malware, all check out OK.
Has anyone any ideas what to try next, I have tried removing all items from
the system tray one at a time but no change. I have removed and re installed
Zone alarm and AVG virusguard. The programmes I tend to have running in the
tray all the time are Outlook and excel, I have tried not leaving these
running but no change.
Any help gratefully received

chkdsk and defrag since the move ?

Hi, yes chkdsk and defrag was one of the first things I did, one problem is
that it can be days between failures, so you think it's OK only to find it
locked up the following morning!

Hi Folks, I think/hope that I have sorted out the problem, I had the power
option under the screen saver set to turn off the hard drive after 2 hours,
it seems my new drive with an 8mb cache does not seem to like being turned
off?? I have set it never to turn off an it seems to be behaving! I really
do not know why that should be the case? Many thanks for your assistance

Peter
