Task Bar and start menu

A Friend recently upgraded to XP, was working fine.
We discovered two trojan horse bugs and cleaned and
fixed. however now the system starts but without any task
bar or start menu!
When you drag mouse in the task bar area all you get is a
never ending hour glass! Any ideas? Bugs still in system?

1) Learn the difference between a 'bug' and a 'virus' - a 'trojan' is the
latter.
