two problems, that doesn't make the archives, and i'm not
going to spend $40 or whatever for a program that I could
get the source code for (albeit for a different os).

Maybe 7-zip? It's under GNU LGPL, so its free.

Total Comander + plugins www.ghisler.com solved all my problems. Hack!
I even found a way to easyly unzip *.z files under Windows! Use TC for
30 days and you'll stick to it forever!
Money worth spending!
