tape backup problem with w2k server

On one of our servers (Exchange server), we have a DLT
tape backup installed. Up to recently ti worked fine but
now, the device manager lists no problems what so ever bu
if we right-click on "my computer" and go to "manage", the
tape backup device is crossed out with a red X and we can
no longer use the backup option.

As you can see, this is a quite serious problem that has
us stumped!

If you can give me any bit of info,it would be greatly
appreciated!

Have you tried a new tape?

try shutdown server, power on tape drive, wait for a while then power on
server, before it go to windows, you will see searching for SCSI device,
locate the tape drive to confirm the hardware level detect the device. then
go to windows, if the drive still not there, please give more details on the
error message after you click properties on the red X items.

if the above still doesn't fit your case, try cleaning cartridge, check
cable, try the drive in other machine (with proper driver installed), new
tape..etc.
