semaphore timeout period has expired during tape backup

Hi,

Recently during our daily backups we have been receiving the error:

"Storage device COMPAQ 3 reported an error on a request to write data to the
media.
Error Reported: Semphore timeout period has expired."

This has happened on 3 different days, not 3 days consecutively, using 3
different tapes.

What problems could this error message indicate ?
