Hello all,
I've searched TechNet the KnowledgeBase, google and through this group
and the XP General & Help and Support groups and haven't found any mention
of a similar problem. Earlier this week my tablet pc, a Toshiba Portege
3500 started stuttering (perhaps hiccup is a better analogy?). I typically
run at least Outlook 2002 (XP) Winamp 5.03 and a browser (firebird) at all
times. I first noticed the stutter/hiccup effect in Winamp as it would
cause the digital skipping sound similar to what you hear when a CD skips.
At first it wasn't too bad, but I had a few apps open (maybe 5 or 6.. I have
1Gb of RAM so it's generally not a problem) and it started getting worse.
The machine would stutter for a second at a time, locking up everything in
the process. I would get control back after a second or two, but it would
happen again and again. I managed to open the task manager and saw the
"System" process was jumping to between 30% and 50% cpu usage when the
lockups occured.
At first I thought it might be one of the updates that came in through
automatic update recently. So I carefully backed out each one. That didn't
solve the problem so I reinstalled them all. For good measure I backed out
any driver updates I'd done in the past month. Still no help. I've since
gone through every possible update that is available for my system, (which
wasn't much.. an updated display driver, an updated sound driver...)
I keep my system up-to-date on all patches and antivirus updates. (A/V
is automatic, we run Symantec Corp. 8.1) None of the software I'm using has
changed with the exception of the last 4 updates from MS. (That would be
MS04-011, 012, 013, 014) Has anyone else experienced this problem or
anything like it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I don't recognise the symptoms (also having one, but mine has SP2 RC1 on
it). I suggest that you try the specialist group

Yes, actually it does. I've also noticed that my keyboard (MS Natural
Elite) numlock light goes out and comes back usually when this happens. I
took out the USB 2.0 hub (Kensington USB 2.0 Pocket Hub) and hooked up my
mouse (MS Wireless Optical Blue) and keyboard direct thinking it might have
something to do with the hub. The stuttering continues however. Any clues?

Try setting the virtial memory set to a fixed value. My tablet pc
locked up and was horrible before I set the virtial memory to a fixed
vaule rather than letting windows doing it
