Table of Contents

I have a Word 2003 doc that uses the Table of contents function to pull
section headings and subheadings into a TOC. The document has two major
sections. Call them A and B. I need the TOC set up so that it only takes
the headings/subheadings from section A not section B. I have tried using
breaks with no luck. Is there a way that I can force the TOC to stop
inserting at the end of section A.

Thanks in advance and have a great day.

What you can do is make note of the formatting used in the TOC styles or
Heading styles you used. In Section B, modify the styles and use a dfferent
name, In the "style based in" box select normal (or another style but not a
heading style) , apply the formatting you recorded earier and click OK.
Create the TOC. It should only include those headings from Section A.

This has crossed my mind. My concern is that I need to maintain consistancy
throughout the doc and maintain the styles. The doc is for a business. Is
there another option?

not sure if there is an easier way, I would be curious to hear any other
suggestions.

John:
The quickest way that comes to my mind is using Heading 6-9 in Section
B to mimic 1-4 in Section A. Choose the same style settings so the eye
doesnt see a difference. You can set up the TOC to use only 1-4 (or
less levels of course).
There are other ways indeed, but probably more elaborative, e.g.
building from bookmarks or from other styles than the built-in styles.
E.g., "\b Bookmark Name" builds a TOC only from the section with that
bookmark name (you can use "Section_B" as bookmark name). Check the
Word help files for the possible switches for the TOC.

Bookmark the section you want to base the TOC on and create a TOC referring
to that bookmark; see "A partial table of contents" in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm.
