Sytem Restore

I am having a problem with System restore. If I launch system restore, the
dialog box opens which should show you the list of drives, and the last
restore point done.

If I do this, all I see in the box is "searching" and it stays like this for
a very long time, and does not give me any details

Can anyone help with a solution? Do I need to reinstall system restore, if
so, how do I do this

It sounds as though the System Restore file store is corrupted. The way to
deal with this is to turn off System Restore, reboot and turn it back on.
NOTE: this will delete all restore points but given that you can't seem to
access any previous points, this would not seem to make much difference.

The problem I am having, is I do not think that system restore is working

First, when I do windows update, and it comes up with "creating restore
point" prior to installing updates, it can stay like that forever, this
morning it stayed for at least 1 hour before I gave up and turned my PC off.

I have also let it shut down and install updates overnight, it was still
installing 1 of 4 this morning

If I click on system restore from the menu, nothing happens at all....

Also, If I enter system restore through "My Computer" everything is greyed
out, and it stays on "searching" for discs, I get no option to turn off
system restore at all, or no restore points, or options to create on

Is there a way to reinstall system restore without a full install?

My pc was installed with Windows MCE to start with, but was upgraded to
Vista Home Premium, by way of the free upgrade disc from Dell with my new PC.
everything works OK except this. I did have a problem with windows update,
but dell fixed this via remote desktop on Monday, and the "creating restore
point" worked then... I am very confused...

I do not want to do a full install if I can just reinstall system restore..

As Bert Kinney suggested in this thread, you might try in Safe Mode. When
the system boots, start pressing F8, at the menu, choose Safe Mode.

That said, it sounds as though a little more is going on. If this was an
upgrade over XP, you may have a driver conflict or some issue with an
application. Have you run a virus scan, have you checked for malware, have
you checked to make sure all your drivers are up to date and Vista
compatible, have you checked to make sure all your apps are Vista compatible
and checked for updates to them.

System Restore is not a separate module, it is an integrated part of the
operating system and cannot be installed separately or reinstalled without a
complete reinstall of the OS.

Something else to check, open Services under Administrative Tools in Control
Panel, scroll to Volume Shadow Service, be sure it is NOT disabled. I
believe the default is manual. If disabled, set it to manual; System
Restore is a dependent operation of this service. If it's disabled and
setting it to manful doesn't give you functionality, try setting it to
automatic. Also, once you change the setting, assuming you do so, reboot
the computer before checking to see if there is a change in System Restore.
