My Toshiba laptop running Windows Xp, gives and error
message of <windows root> \system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of the file

The computer will not boot up in safe mode or any other
mode. How do I load this file? I do not have the
Windows XP disk as it came installed on the laptop. The
Toshiba Recovery disk will erase all the info on the
computer is there a way to do this with out losing all my
data?

Andy, if you can't resolve the issue with the following Microsoft KB Article, please post
back. There is another way.

Good luck

It'll be some hard work, most likely requiring a power user in the very least - create a bootable disc that loads your network card's drivers. Use network access (perhaps using good 'ol DOS commands) to transfer valuable documents / files to another computer before running the restore disks (you cannot copy the 'hal' from any system other than an identical Toshiba laptop - sorry).

My buddy has this, darn, I forget what its called, a hard drive cart
maybe? but you put a laptop drive in it and then connect it to a working
XP pc to get the files off.

Thanks i looked at that, but I dont have the Windows XP
CD, just the Toshiba recovery CD's which reload
everything, any ideas on a fix without the XP CD?

It really doesnt give me any options, just says that if I
wish to continue all my files will be deleted. I can
also get to an A: prompt, but that is about all.

Does your computer have a floppy disk drive? If so, the following Article has a link to
create a set of floppy boot disks and instructions on how to use the Recovery Console from
those disks. You will then have to repair the Boot.ini as described in the earlier
article:

Again, good luck
