<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Received the dreaded message, "<windows root>\system32\hal.dll."> I tried
re-installing the microsoft xp operating system (selected both options, first
repair and then set up windows xp) and still receive new message on a blue
screen, after window tries to install setup. "Setup did not find any hard
disk drives installed in your computer." I ran a hard drive diagnostic check
on both hd and they came up fine. This is turning into a pain in the ass.

HP Pavilion dv8327cl

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Go into setup (BIOS) and see if the drives are detected there.

Any chance of loose wires, changed cable positions, changed jumper pins?

Since this is an HP computer, follow the instructions to restore the machine
to "as shipped" condition that came with it. If you don't have the owner's
manual that came with it, you can download it at the HP website.

Make sure you copy your data off to external media before doing this or you
will never retrieve your data.

As Ron suggested, check the BIOS to determine if the drive is
listed/detected. To enter the BIOS: Boot the machine and press F10 when
you see the message "Press <F10> to enter setup" message is displayed in the
lower-left corner of the screen.

The message is coming from XP, so the OS is at least trying to load,
therefore the hard drive must be at least "available". A couple
things on the HDD must load (ntldr and ntoskrnl.exe) before hal.dll.

If you have a bootable XP installation CD (perhaps unlikely), you
should boot into the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r on your HDD to
check the integrity of the file system (did you have a power
interruption?) Not a reinstall, not any kind of recovery - you want
to run chkdsk /r first.

If the file system is broken, nothing you try to install will work
until it is fixed.

If you do not have a bootable XP installation CD, you can create a
bootable CD that just has Recovery Console on it, boot on that, check
your stuff out from there, then decide what to do. At least you will
know what it's not.

It doesn't seem productive to try any kind reinstall, repair, Restore
Point, etc. until you verify the integrity of the file system.

Things may have gotten more unrecoverable if you have since tried to
reinstall and repair on a corrupted file system (It's not working, is
it...).
