System/Upgrade recommendation please

Hello,

Hoping for your advice please? I recently purchased a notebook (T22) on ebay
(for a great price) and it had Win XP Pro SP2 already installed (supposedly
genuine). Lo and behold around a month after I started using it I find I am
unable to get past the login screen (receiving a message regarding
registration, but when clicking OK, being logged off again) software has
obviously been cracked at some stage and I won't elaborate on how I feel....
Anyway, I guess I have to purchase new software (pref Win XP Pro SP2) and I
would like to what would be most suitable. My main concern is that I would
like to retain all files/information currently contained and inaccessible - I
don't want to lose anything.

What is your recommendation in this regard (ie; new software or upgrade,
etc...)?

Many thanks.

What you are getting is a notification to activate Windows. Click yes to
activate now.
If activation by internet fails because you aren't automatically online at
bootup choose activate by phone. Call the toll free number displayed and
follow the prompts.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your reply. I don't even get these options. I get to the login
screen, receive the pop-up "Do you want to activate now - Yes/No" - I click
yes and a screen pops up saying "Windows is already activated, click OK to
proceed" and then I just says it's logging off and I end up back at the sign
in screen again.

Hmm -- try booting to safe mode and delete the wpa.dbl file located in the
\windows\system32 directory. This will force reactivation.

You will need to enable show hidden files and uncheck hide protected
operating system files to see the file (Tools/Folder Options/View)

What if the software is not genuine ? Will Reactivation or changing the
product key get me anywhere or will I have to buy new software ?

Thanks.

If the software is not genuine you will need to purchase XP. If you want to
keep your current files intact you will need to purchase XP Pro and perform
a repair install.
