system tray icon sometimes appears and sometimes doesn't

I have a number of applications that startup each time I boot. Several of
them put an icon in the system tray. Two of these applications sometimes
place the icon in the tray and sometimes don't. MSAS and Norton are the two
that give me trouble. I have tried to place them in different parts of the
startup sequence, e.g local machine versus current machine. Nothing seems to
work. The applications are clearly listed in task manager so I know they are
running, it would be nice to get them in the system tray. any suggestions????

Hi RSS;

Try this first:
You can repair Windows AntiSpyware using Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and click Change. Click Next, and then
click Updªte.Let us know how it works ºut.

Hello RSS,

try this:

Goto: Start/Control Panel/Add-Remove programs/MSAS
then click on support info!!!
Then click on repair!

If that wont work then it is really a XP problem,

I give a workaround for all the missing things in the systray:
Go to:
C:\Windows\system32\
and look for systray.exe, right click on it and make a shortcut
from it, then move the shortcut to the common startup folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\StartMenu\Programs\Startup\

Restart the computer.

It's actually not the programs giving you trouble, but instead is your OS,
Windows XP in this case.

The customization feature for the systray has been a known bug for some time.

The only workaround is to log off and log back in and all the icons that
don't normally display will show up.

This was first reported here back about three - four months ago by a MS-MVP,
bt I forgot who it was that reported it.

??
Tom,

Thanks for the suggestion but I think Alan's response is more on target. I
let you know if the update changes anything. (I think I had the latest
version).

your chance to be responsive!!!!

Hello RSS,

because you says that there where more icons disappeared, i suggest to
place the link in the startup, works for me and others!

Hello Andre,

did you try the workaround i give?

Regards >*< TOM >*<

Tom,
I placed systray.exe in the startup folder but it didn't do anything. Also,
when I click on it it doesn't appear to do anything either. I have a startup
program that starts msas from HKCU with the program GCASDTSERV the other
program that I have problems with is NMAIN.exe from norton. I try to start
that from HKLM. Both apps show in task mgr but not in systray. If I log off
and then back on they show up. It;s a pain, be nice if there was some kind
of work around.

I think, based on the fact that you are seeing this with both the Microsoft
Antispyware icon and the Symantec icon, that it is likely the XP bug you are
seeing.

That said, I don't know the current best prescription for that--Tom's
thoughts look reasonable to me.

This one isn't new, and is well known, I think. It doesn't cause crashes,
so it doesn't end up in the automated feedback. Not sure how to push it up
in the priorities....

I had this issue on one PC. It's not a "real" problem because the programs
were actually running, just not showing in the system tray. Trying to "fix"
this annoyance can "kill the cat", but this is what cured mine:

(1) Removed all Symantec products through add/remove programs.
(2) Ran the various "cleaner" tools that are available on the Symantec web
site. These are the cleaners for prior versions of Symantec products, not
the virus cleaners.
(3) Searched the boot drive and deleted all leftover Symantec folders
(4) Ran a registry cleaner (CCleaner and Registrar Lite in my case) to find
and remove all Symantec entries left). THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS - if you
remove the wrong things, windows may not even load - use at your own risk
and backup the registry and all files/setting you don't want to loose.

After all of that and restarting the PC, the tray icons were normal. I
reinstalled Systemworks 2005 and it also now shows in the tray. I wish I
had discovered what the conflict really was, but I didn't. Also, you don't
want to be connected to the internet while doing all of this as you will not
have any virus protection once you remove Symantec Antivirus.

Thanks Rusty but the cure seems more risky then the problem. You are however suggesting that it's symantec that's causing the problem. Maybe they should fix it! Kind of makes me wish I had an apple.
