I can get to the point of viewing my desktop and get a message the system has
recovered from a serious error.
The error report contains the files C:Windows\Minidump\Mini\ 092505-16.dmp
and another"Wer8.temp sysdat.xml" in a temp folder but cant keep the system
on long enough to get the full path.
This was caused by a virus from a website.
Should I give up and wipe the hard drive or is there anything I can do to
save any of my recent files?

1. Safe mode and virus scan.
2. Boot disk with NTFS support and virus scan.
3. CD boot and recovery console to isolate the problem files.
4. Wipe and load.

Thank you James you pointed me in the right direction. I was able to do a
system restore in safe mode and have access to my files. I continue to get
the annoying "system has recovered from a serious error" message but the
system no longer shuts down after 1 minute.
If you or anyone else knows how I can stop the error message from appearing
on startup that would be a bonus, but is a small price to pay all things
considered.
Thanks again,
dusty
