Upon boot, I noticed that i didn't hear the usual windows start wave. I
opened Sounds and Audio Devices properties dialogue box and selected the
"Sounds" tab. The Sound Scheme is "windows default" but now the are no
program events to select and all buttons related are grayed out. How do i
restore the system sounds and events?

Everything else is great with sound. I can play/hear CD's , listen to
streaming media from the internet and play & hear all .wav files from
Windows Media Player. I believe this would indicate that all is well
hardware wise. How can I restore the system sounds and events in the OS
software. I'm running Win XP Pro sp2 with all updates in place.

Go back to Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel and select the
Hardware Tab. See if all of your Audio Devices are
showing up as Normal. If greyed out or yellow marked then your Audio
Drivers need to be reinstalled.

Nothing is greyed out or yellow marked when I open the device manager and
inspect the sound/audio devices and drivers in ctrl panel.. all looks good.
All sounds good with other media players.

Login to another user profile, export this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents

To export, type this in Start-Run:

REG EXPORT HKCU\AppEvents C:\Sounds.reg

Then, login to the subject user profile, and right-click the C:\Sounds.reg
file. Merge the contents with the registry.
