System Slowdown Using WMP

I just did a second fresh install of XP Pro on my machine:

Asus A7V8X
Athlon XP 2200+
512 MB PC 2700 RAM
PNY 6600GT
80GB Western Digital

The install went fine, but now I have a problem with Windows Media
Player. Whenever it starts to load and play video the computer will
grind to a halt, CPU usage parks itself at 100%, and I'm eventually
forced to restart the machine. I haven't had time to check other
programs on this install, but I had just installed the computer the
night before and had the same problem, among others which forced me to
install it again the following night, but was still able to play WoW,
run Photoshop and iTunes, browse the internet, etc. Just anything
having to do with using WMP kills my computer.

Any ideas?

I've now discovered it's any type of video: WMP, trailers on apple.com
in Quicktime, etc. Installed all Windows Updates, updated to WMP 11,
no dice.
