system shutdown when trying to run adaware se

Perhaps someone could give me some ideas on what is going on with my wife's
system, P4 running windows XP home, I think she has spyware or malware on
her system since she downlowds a lot of games, usually I can clean the thing
up, but last night in the middle of trying to run adaware se the system shut
down and rebooted, i think this is a spyware or malware issue, something
about dchost control and it only gave me a minute before it shut down. I
could not stop the system shutdown from the end program menu, seemed like it
was locked and would not let me stop the system shutdown. My wife gets a
lot of pop ups, mostly antivirus ads, need to know how to remove the bug
without the system shutting down.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this bug off of my system or a
suggestion of where I could post this question I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, Don

Run all scans in safe mode.

Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should update
and run them weekly.

After your system is clean use these programs to help keep it clean:

For viruses, start with Trend Micro’s Sysclean and McAfee’s Stinger.
Download them and the Sysclean signature file. Turn off system restore,
boot into safe mode and run them. Boot back into normal mode and run a
full AV scan with your normal AV program. Then turn system restore back
on.
