System shut-down when loading CD

I have been having trouble when starting my PC; the CD drive clicks like it's
trying to read a disc & won't start up. If I turn it off & re-start it
usually will start up. Now, whenever PC is on & I load a CD, the system
shuts down & re-starts. As soon as it tries to read the disc, it shuts down
again, re-starts & so on. I have a 3 yr old Compaq & am running Windows XP
Pro. I haven't added any new programs though I did update Windows Media
Player a week ago when I put a disc in. That day it played with no problem
but the original problem began before I did the download for the new version
of WMP. Is the CD drive bad? I hope someone can help with this weird
problem. I don't know where to begin to diagnose this problem. I have tried
different cds with same results & also tried a system restore to before the
new WMP version with no success.

If you restored the system back to the previous version of Windows Media,
then the problem is not related to software but more likely to hardware. I
would not have high hopes on your CD drive cause clicks are not normal for a
CD drive.

Uninstall the drive from My Computer\drive properties\Hardware\select
drive\properties\driver\uninstall, and restart the computer, if no change,
the CD drive is probably bad.

Next try this: right click on My Computer\Manage\Disc Management\right
click on drive\Properties\Properties Tab\*unckeck* "Enable digital CD audio
for this CD Device"... if this doesn't make a change I would check the drive
connections inside the CPU and if that doesn't help, try another CD device.

Thanks for you help & suggestions- on my way to work & then out of town for a
few days; will certainly try them when I return & let you know.
