system restore

I am not experiencing a problem but I am curious about many posts I see here
that advise using system restore to deal with SP2 installation problems.

Does system restore in fact allow restoring a point prior to the
installation of SP2?

Much of Windows got recompiled in SP2 (I beleive it was to allow for a flag
relating to data execution protection) and I question whether it could even
work to restore a point prior to the upgrade without at least rolling back
SP2 first. I question whether even that would work.

Open System Restore.

Click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

Click the date that you installed Windows XP SP2, and then click
Installed Window XP Service Pack 2 in the Restore Point box.

Click Next, and then follow the instructions on the screen to remove
Windows XP SP2.
