System restore

Hello this my first post but its about a problem. Yesterday I downloade
a film ( a backup o one of my DVD's it has got scratched and I reall
wanted to see it as well. Anyway when I did I opened up the video fil
into windows media player, it asked me to get some rights/ acquisition
to play the file. As the message was coming from windows media player
guess hmm it must be true. Usually I wouldn't if anything asked me t
download anything. As it finished windows media message came up with
message to say it was downloaded correctly. So I checked task manage
making sure it was actually windows media player and it was. When
tried playing the file it wouldn't play. Whatever it downloaded hadn'
taken effect yet. Then I blue screened. My laptop wouldn't boot u
normally. So I tried booting up with " last good configuration" i
booted up but I found out what had happened. All my programmes were
corrupted" something to do with the registry according to the 60 pop u
messages saying each and every programme had been corrupted. Including
pop up message for windows explorer and install shield. I then trie
booting up in safe mode. Everything works. So that leaves me with a fe
questions.

1 Does windows let anything access the registry with UAC off ?
2 If it worked in safe mode is the registry is fine ?
3 Would a system restore help?
4 would I have to re-installing vista?
5 Is their anything I can do?

Can someone answer some of these questions. Re installing is the las
thing I want to do I am half way through a big project for a client
And i just reinstalled vista and Ubuntu last week after vista stoppe
working right.

Thank you for readin

1) Yes. If it didn't not even windows would run!
2) It should be. If the registry is corrupt you would blue screen on start
up no matter if it was safe mode or the normal mode
3) I don't have any guarantees but it might help. Its worth a try anyway
4) If 3 doesn't work then a reinstall would
5) Rather use a codec pack (they are out there) or use a free all-in-one
media player like VLC or Media player Classic Home Cinema

Sounds to me like fake spyware removal may have gotten onto your pc. After
trying system restore, I suggest you try downloading and running
Malwarebytes Anti-malware. If that does not help fix your issue, consider
looking at one of the sites such as bleepingcomputer.com for help. Good
luck.

I know you said it was a backup of one of "your" DVD's, but I doubt it.
There have been a ton of complaints in Usenet about an auto-loading .exe
being hidden in .vob files. Whoever has done this has caught thousands
unaware.
