system restore

I have not solved my toolbar problem with any of the suggestions offered. I
thought perhaps that I might use system restore to get back to yesterday's
settings. I have now tried 3 dates and each time I get a message that the
system cannot be restored to that date. No reason is given.

Perhaps if you were to tell us what your "toolbar problem" actually is,
and which application's toolbar you're refering to, someone could offer
more relevant advice.

What specific troubleshooting steps have you already taken, and what
were the results of each?

No one can help if you don't provide at least a modicum of information.

You've probably shot yourself in the foot by starting a new thread; all the
history of what's been done already is now lost to the readers of this post.
You probably should hvae added to your original t hread for best results.

Here is the original posting:

Help. I accidentally clicked something and one of my toolbars
disappeared--the one with icons for Stop, Refresh, Forward, Back, Mail, etc.
If I left click on a double arrows at the top they appear in a box and can
be used. But I can't drag that whole box anywhere. And if I right click at
the top and get a list of toolbars with check marks I can't find anything to
click on to get that toolbar back.

****
I was advised to right click and then check the appropriate toolbar. But
all the ones I want are already checked. Again, if I LEFT click on those
double arrows at the top left, all the icons I want appear in a vertical
box. I can use them there, but I don't know how to get them all back on top
into a toolbar.

So I tried the system restore and failed there too.

In IE go to view\ toolbar\ and unlock the toolbar___now you can move
toolbars around

The toolbar has not been locked. When I left click on those two arrows I
get a large white vertical box with my icons for Refresh, Mail etc. I'd
like to get all those icons on to a toolbar, which is where they have been
for years before I did something--by accident--this morning.

But why do I also keep getting a message that my system restore can't
restore my system to any of the dates (in bold) that I choose?

For the toolbar problem, may want to try this fix from Doug Knox:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_toolbarfix.htm

For System Restore: Unusable restore points can occur for a number of
reasons (see: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html ). Bottom line, if the
restore points are unusable the best thing to do is to clear out all system
restore points and start over. This won't help with restoring the computer
at the moment but will increase the chances of having usable restore points
available down the line.

In case you want to bookmark Bert's site for System Restore (excellent
reference site), here's the link for the main page:

Thanks for those instructions on dealing with my inability to perform a
system restore.
