System Restore

When I've used System Restore I notice that it sometimes duplicates certain
Program Files, and perhaps other files, by adding a (2) or (3) etc on to the
original file. Can these duplicate programs be safely deleted?

I've deleted mine a couple of times after first scanning the registry
to ascertain that there were no references to these items. I Haven't
had any problems.
