System Restore won't work

When I try to run System Restore, everything seems to work OK. I select a Restore Point and click the appropriate buttons. The window pops up that tells me it is restoring, then it reboots the computer. When the system comes back up, however, it tells me the system cannot be restored to that date and time and that no changes have been made to my computer. It does this no matter which restore point I choose. Any help?

Hi,
The command-line parameter is case sensitive: Try this:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD
2. Click Start > Run
3. Type the following command and press Enter
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"
[Case Sensitive]

System Restore core files should be reinstalled.

Alternately, you may also open Windows Explorer, navigate to
"C:\Windows\Inf" folder and right-click sr.inf (choose Install) (sr.inf
shows up as sr in windows explorer)

I have same problem. Let me know if you got it sorted. Also I cannot run the virus software to kill whatever is causing it. I had a trojan used a program to kill it but the system restore is still disabled.

Evidently the spyware/trojan hasn't been completely removed. Reason for my
comment is that many of them disable system restore as common behavior.

Have you tried running any other detectors/cleaners in the meantime?

If this is not the case:

For Pro: GPEDIT.MSC can be used to disable/enable System Restore. Disabling
it causes the tab to vanish from System Properties.

Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, System Restore.
The option is turn off System Restore, and it should be Disabled or Not
Configured.

For Home: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
Value name: DisableSR. Value of 1 turns it off, 0 or deleting it turns it
on.
