Why won't my System Restore work. I choose the
appropriate restore point..it goes through the motions
then tells me it can't restore to that point!

I have tried closing System Restore, rebooting, switching
it back on, etc. and it still won't work.

Any ideas anyone will be most appreciated!

there could be a number of reasons for this. is the mem set to full on sys restore? do you run any cleanup programs that might be deleting your backup? what happened that you needed to use it?

Mem is set to Max; No cleanup program run and I wanted
to restore because I had lost a facility in IE6 which
operates when wrong/bad URL address is given.

Hi,

Once System Restore goes bad, the only thing you can do is stop it and
restart it. Start/run services.msc, locate the SR service and doubleclick
it. Click the stop button, then set the startup type dropdown to disabled.
Click apply/ok, then reboot.

Then, check the "System Volume Information folder" on each drive and delete
any contents. Reverse the steps to restart it.

Be forewarned that doing this removes all existing restore points, but it
doesn't really matter as they weren't working anyways.

If this does not help, follow these steps to reinstall System Restore:

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set it to "Show hidden
files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files
[recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the sr.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

Perfectly normal on lots of systems. System restore is not a perfect
system. Try turning it off and making sure the previous restore points
are deleted and then turn it on again and cross your fingers that it
will start working.

Hi There!

Many thanks for your reply to my posting. I have done as
you say and - fingers crossed - it will work when I need
it.

Once again - thanks!
