System Restore Won't Complete???

I create manual restore points. When I attempt to do a system restore on one
of these points, the screen that says that files and settings are being
retored, will never complete, with a restart of the PC and the restore point
in efffect. Anybody else having problems? I have my Norton protection of
programs unchecked, BTW. I have not tried the restore yet from an
automatically created restore point. Expect the same problem. What's up
with this? I have not been impressed with Vista yet . . . . .

No, nothing to do with Norton. I am using the built in Restore function for
Vista. There used to be a problem getting restore to work in XP if one of
the Norton IS settings was checked (the protection of their product being
changed). I have that unchecked.

You may have to completely uninstall Norton
before the System Restore will function
correctly.

Maybe you would have better results if you
boot to Safe Mode and run System Restore
from there.

Ok, so I have tried System Restore in Safe mode. Same problem. I wait an
hour and it stays running on the screen that says Restoring Files and
Settings, System Restore is Initializing. The little arrow that goes around
and round indicating that something is processing is working all the time.
There is really no hard drive activity that is going on after the first few
minutes. I got Norton out of the loop. What the flip is wrong with System
Restore? I even disabled System Restore for my C drive and then re-enabled
it, so as to blow away all the previos restore points and start fresh. No
luck. Nobody else having this problem? Does system restore take longer than
an hour and I am not waiting long enough before I power down to get out of
it? Never worked that way in XP. I have had too many issues with Vista I
am not a fan at the moment. Thanks for any further help . . .

Guess what.? Same hang-up with System Restore when I run it from the recovery
console. What the flip is wrong with this? No work in normal, in safe mode,
or in recovery environment. Do I maybe have a peripheral attached that can
keep this puppy from working? Any further help with my woes? Can the system
restore function be reinstalled on Windows Vista?

Update - with no success. I disabled (unattached) all my peripherals (to
include an external Iomega hard drive) to see if something hardware related
was hanging this system restore operation up. To no avail, just hangs again
(normal, safe mode, and recovery environment). I don't know what to do from
here. I have exhausted all my options. The system does successfully create
the restore points (automatic and manual).

Well, I am totally mystified. I have done all the troubleshooting that has
been presented. The last resort was an Upgrade Repair Install, as was
proposed. After it was competed, the first thing I attempted was a System
Restore action. Same behavior. Stayed in a loop forever. My system is
having performance problems now after the repair install, but I will be
restoring it to an image I made 3 days ago with Norton Ghost. Might I just
say, Vista is the worst junk I have delt with in a long ime. Thanks for the
help Mr. Kinney, I do appreciate the attempts. If you or anybody else has
any reachinf suggestions, I am all ears. Hard to believe others aren't
having this same problem. Am I alone in the world . . . .?

Hi,
Am also having same problem! Having problem with user profile services not
logging in and the advice is to do a system restore but seeing as I can't do
a restore I'm now stuck with both problems! I've only had this computer for
9 weeks! It has Vista Home premium, not using Nortons. This is extremely
frustrating and disappointing. Hope someone can offer a solution that is
easy to work through.

Cheers,
Shaz

Nobody has a solution yet. I tried to do a System Recovery action with
recovery disks to get my system back to my HP factory load so I could start
over and the first thing I would do is a system restore action to see if it
worked as a fresh load. Well, my HP won't even do a System Recovery option.
HP support said I needed a new motherboard with a new 'tatooing' (whatever
that is). So, my PC is in repair and when I get it back, First thing is
trying system restore again. He said the MB configuration problem is not
likely related to the system restore not working, but I really wonder . . .

Just to close the loop. I could never get my factory system recovery to work
on my PC either. I called HP support and they said I needed to send the PC
in and get a new motherboard and a new 'tatooing' (??). In any event, I sent
it off for 10 days, got it back. factory system reloaded, and system restore
now working like a champ. What a frustration, but I am working now with the
new system. Thanks for any attempts to help!

Open the Norton program Control screen, settings, turn each one off, close.
Then system restore functions normally, both create or restore points will
restore properly.
hope this helps you. Bruce
