system restore without accessing safemode?

L

Lenny

Hi,
As my computer will not get past the start up page (because the USB mouse
and keyboard are not working) is there any way of doing a system restore to
try to solve this problem without logging on normally or in safemode?

The keyboard works until the window drivers start. Is there anything that I
can do with a startup disc like bartPE as both the keyboard and mouse works
if I start windows with BartPE startup disc.
Cheers
Lenny

Hi Lenny,

You could go to device manager and right click on all the USB root
hubs and select Uninstall one by one until you have no USB items at
all! No that's not a silly idea because when you restart they will all
get re-detected and installed.

This will freshen up your PC's USB driver chain and maybe everything
will work ok now.

Hope that helps.

I can't get logged in because both the mouse and the keyboard are USB so I
am unable to go to device manager.

Doing a repair installation seems a little drastic for this problem. If I
could find al alternative that would be great.

Does the computer have ps/2 ports so you could substitute a plain
vanilla ps/2 keyboard and mouse?

If not, then there are rescue systems such as ERD Commander from which
you can run System Restore on the local machine but that was a very
expensive program that AFAIK is no longer available. There is a chance a
local computer shop might have it. I don't believe you can run System
Restore from a Bart's but you can check on a Bart's forum. There are
quite a few of them:

What about booting into Safe Mode Command Prompt? This will load Safe
Mode without the GUI. If this works for you, then at the command prompt do:

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe [enter]
