Hi all
Can system restore files that are missing in my computer be reinstalled via
original OEM cd disk?
OS winxp pro
Dell insp. 9300

Yes. All manufacturers provide a means to return a computer to the state it
was in when purchased.

System restore & reinstalling corrupt/damaged system files are two different
things
See 'System File Checker' in win help
It may or may not work using your OEM cd, it depends on the sp level's

Actually restoring your PC to origonal condition will destroy all that is
now on your PC

is this possible?
Thanks.

System Restore is always available on your system. It may not be
working, but it's there and fixable.

You need to explain your situation better because no one seems to
understand what you need.

After a repair install, I find that system restore feature works only in safe
mode and not regular mode.
Would you be able to advise if this problem is fixable.
Thanks again

Some antivirus programs can interfere with System Restore. You might want to try
disconnecting from the internet, disabling your AV program, and try to run
System Restore in normal mode. Make sure you enable your AV program before you
reconnect to the internet.

Good luck

Hi Daave
Thanks for your response.
I followed the instructions you supplied.
Everything seemed to work as you stated, except that,
when I got to point 15/, I was unable to find sr.inf, but the closest thing
to it was sr.dnf, which I tried.
The cycle completed okay.
Can you say if I did the correct thing or do I have to search for the sr.inf
file.
Thanks again

Correction
I clicked the sr button rpt the "sr" not the sr.dnf button and followed
instructions to the end of the instructions and it completed okay.
Sorry for the misinfo.
Tks

You're welcome, Frank.

I'm sure it *was* the sr.inf file, but you must have extensions hidden!
To unhide them, you may do the following.

Open My Computer.

Tools | Folder Options | View

Under "Hidden files and folders," make sure the circle next to "Show
hidden files and folders" is selected.

Then click OK.

Other than wanting to reinstall System Restore, did you have any other
problems?

In one of your responses you stated the following, "After a repair install, I
find that system restore feature works only in safe mode and not regular mode."

If system restore works in safe mode, but not in normal mode, it usually
indicates that some program or process running in normal mode is the source of
the problem. It's doubtful that reinstalling System Restore would be the cure.
As I suggested in my earlier response, the first place to look is the security
programs installed on your computer. Antivirus programs such as Norton Antivirus
and avast! can cause System Restore to not work properly in normal mode. When
the computer is booted into safe mode, System Restore works correctly because
the AV programs aren't running.

With that in mind, you might want to pass along information concerning what
security programs are running on your computer. Also, try to expand on what
happens when you run System Restore in normal mode. Include any error messages
that System Restore reports.

Hello again
I would like to tell all the nice people who were trying to help me, that my
problem was solved.
The culprit was, Avast Home Edition freeware. Uninstalling/reinstalling did
no fix it. I have used this AV for quite a while and have never had any
previous problems. I can only guess that the cause might have been one of
their updates. Nepatsfan called it right. Thanks Nep.
Thanks again to all..
Have a good day.
