System Restore not working

Guest

I am using XP Home and have never been able to get the system restore to
work. There are always many restore points available and each time I have
tried to use them (6 or 7 times over the last 2 years and many restore points
each time) it acts like it is working. However when the system reboots
itself I get a screen that says “Your computer cannot be restored to [restore
point]. No Changes have been made to you computer.

Is there a log that might tell me what’s wrong? Is there a switch or
setting that might need changing? Is there a way to do it manually? Any
other ideas?

Thank you in advance

Hi Charlie,

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Hi Bert

I checked event viewer and none of the four srservice entries gave any new
information. I tried your tips and some combination of adjusting the disk
space used to under 1 GB, deleting all the existing points and creating a new
one and taking my D drive off the monitoring list, I was able to get a
successful restore.

Many thanks
Charlie

I am running XP home, The system restore is not working, there are several
things going on, first the calander is in Febuary, 2006 I can't go back to
January or forward to March. Second only the last 3-4 day's are highlighted.
Third I can set my own restore point and seems to be working, but after it
re-boots nothing has changed.

Mr. Kinney, I tried a lot of things on your troubleshoot site for "System
Restore"
Nothing worked, do you have anymore sugestions? I don't know much about
computers, but I spend the majority of my time on my computer I am totally
disabled my wife says it's my life. I've been trying find out whats wrong
with this computer for a month now, being on Social Security we cannot afford
the price
of a repair person. Has I stated yesterday there is more than just one
problem.
Hope someone can help.

Mr. Kinney:
I did what you sugested, I went through the steps twice just to make sure.
The following is the message I get: (The Files "sr.sys" on windows xp home
edition
service pack 2 cd is needed. Type path where file is located, and then
click o.k.)

Dialoge box: (c:\windows\inf\i386)
I have a Dell computer, with it came eight CDs, not one says anything about
System Restore. In fact my xp disc is Home edition with service pack 1a, but
my system properties tell me service pack 2. Thank you.

When the reinstall asks for the missing files, browse to the following
path

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\

Go to Start - Search - All files and folders and do a search for sr.*
and look for sr.sy_ or sr.sys
If you find them, right click on the sr.inf file and browse to the
folder where they are located.

This is another option.

If these options don't work out, email me at (e-mail address removed) (remove
the NS) with System Restore in the subject line.
