Ramesh,

System Restore kept erroring out and not letting me into the program. i
could not go to the Tab in System properties either. Your solution to
reinstall SR in this thread was great! I did it and now i can run System
restore.

2 Questions--
#1 I migrated my HDD from a smaller one to a larger one using the utility
provided by HDD OEM, install of a fresh install of XP HOme. Could that have
been what corrupted my System Restore?

#2 I set a restore point and wonder if that now contains everything i need
to properly restore to this point, since all my previous restore points were
deleted by the reinstall?

Thanks

Keith,

#1 - I don't think so, as this is a fresh install.

#2 - System Restore points get purged in a FIFO basis after a certain time,
or due to disk space problems. Sometimes a third-party software / driver may
suspend the System Restore operation, which inturn erases all the existing
restore points. In short, System Restore cannot be used as a backup tool.
You need to have an drive image utility (such as Image for Windows, Acronis
True Image etc) for reliable partition based backups.

Hi Keith,

At this point I would suggest testing System restore.

i wasn't clear in my first request. I upgraded a HDD and used the HDD utility
to move the old drive (incl XP) to the new drive. Therefore-not a fresh
install. My question is- Could that have caused SR to corrupt?

Secondly, i wanted to know if you set a restore point, which i did after
getting the reinstall of SR, does it rely on any prior restore points to
restore? Or is it a restore to the new point that i set up since the old
points were wiped out when i did the SR reinstall

sorry for the confusion

Yes it could.
Secondly, i wanted to know if you set a restore point, which i did

points to restore?

Yes. All restore points are chained (or linked) together with previous
restore points. When a restore point is chosen, all restore point
created prior to that restore point are also required to complete the
restoration. If there is a log discrepancy or one of the previous
restore points are corrupt, System Restore will fail to restore the
system. Hence, the suggestion to test SR.
Or is it a restore to the new point that i set up
since the old points were wiped out when i did the SR reinstall

sorry for the confusion

No problem.
