System Restore fails

I am running WXP SP2 on a laptop. When I have occasion to reboot, I sometimes
get an error message on closing, which disappears too fast for me to read.
But I think it has something to do with System Restore, because very recently
I have tried to use SR and it has more than once informed me that SR is
impossible to restore. I recently upgraded to Windows Explorer 7. Could this
be a problem? WE 7 certainly mucked up my Hewlett Packard Director. Does
anyone know if there is any connection between this and SR?

Or is there some general SR solution I should be addressing? I think SR is
one of the great reasons for having XP and not to have it working is a great
burden.

If my problem resonates with anyone I should be very grateful for any
heplful response

There is no Windows Explorer 7, there is Internet Explorer 7. See Bert
Kinney's System Restore page for troubleshooting tips for System Restore.
Also look in Event Viewer in the System and Application logs for any related
messages / errors.

Thank you for the prompt response. I realise the item is called Internet
Explorer 7. I have previously been through Bert Kinney's page. Briefly, all
it tells you is how to use System Restore. It does not solve my problem which
is, if I did not make myself sufficiently clear, that my system refuses to
restore to an earlier date whatever I do. Since posting my problem, I have
unistalled IE7 without any improvement, so I have reinstalled it.

My system refuses to restore to an earlier date and I was hoping someone
might be able to point me to a source that addresses that issue.

I hope someone can please help me on this one as I am out of my depth here.

First of all, look in Event Viewer for clues as to what is failing at
shutdown (and anything else that looks "off").

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Second of all, how much free space is on the drive?

Ok, if you had said you had tried the steps on Bert's page, I wouldn't have
suggested it. Have you tried all the troubleshooting steps such as turning
off system restore, then turning it back on, creating a restore point and
seeing if it will restore to that? Have you tried reinstalling system
restore?

Thank you Bert and Rock and Malke for all your advice, which reached me
overnight. As I watch the wind and gales roaring around us on New Year's Eve,
[see Accuweather UK!] I will certainly look at all the suggestions and will
report back shortly.

Happy New Year to one and all.

I have over 13 GB space on C drive and 30 GB on D drive. I looked in Event
Viewer: you honour me beyond my talents to imagine that I could actually
comprehend any of the many items I found therein. But there was nothing that
shouted at me.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Bert: I checked the link you gave me. I even downloaded the Real Player
update. But I have Norton Internet Security 2007 installed, not 2006. I shut
down some of the NIS system (there is no way the 2007 version will permit you
simply to disable with one click). I could not anywhere see how to uninstall
Microsoft Update to return to Windows Update. So with parts of NIS disabled I
ran System Restore, but it would not restore.

Anyway, thanks for the information.

I had previously had this problem and had on another occasion taken the step
of switching off SR, then switching back on again. So I have done that once
more, created a new restore point. Happily SR did restore to that point, so
that nominally all is now repaired. But I ask, for how long?

I am grateful to you for your interest and help and will hope for better
things in the future.

Hi Bert

Following the successful restoration described in my latest reply to Malke,
half an hour later I attempted to restore back to the Restore Operation point
that had been automatically created. Of course, SR would not restore on this
second occasion. So I began conducted a series of switch offs of various
parts of Norton Internet Security 2007. Nothing worked until I found a box to
uncheck that must be the 2007 version of the 2006 switch off mentioned in
your pages.

So, then, open NIS 2007, select tab Norton Internet Security. Then open
Settings/Additional Options/Internet Security and Firewall Options/Protect My
Product/UNCHECK box next to "Turn on protecttion for my Symantec product
(recommende)".

After that procedure, I ran SR successfully. I tried it a second time and
was again successful.

So it seems that the effect of NIS 2007 on SR needs to be written up in more
detail.[Hint!] I hope that my research is useful to you. Your pages certainly
helped me to get to the point. Thank you very much.

Hi Tonyo,

Norton strikes again! I depend no nice folks like you and KB articles to
keep up on Norton products. I wouldn't let any or there crap on any of my
systems. Norton must think there software is better than everyone else's by
breaking System Restore, when in fact it is nothing more than a disease.

And yes, I will update the web page. In the mean time here's there instructions.

You're welcome. Look at Bert's System Restore page for tips on keeping
System Restore healthy. From how you replied previously I don't think you
have taken a close look at all that's on his page.
