System Restore does not work

Richard R

when i click on "system Restore" in
programs>accessories>system tools, I get the following
pop up. "The Procedure entry point remote assistance
prepare system restore could not be located in the
dynamic link library winsta.dll"

If I look in control panel "system" there are only 6 Tabs
and one of them is not system restore. I checked my
account and it shows I am a Administrator.
I have tried to go to c:\windows\inf there is no INF
folder to run sr.inf.
I tried putting in the
1:XP cd
2 click start, run
3; type rundll32.exe advpack.dll,launchINFsection
4: c:\windows\inf\sr.inf

i get a window at #3 that tells me "Error in advpack.dll
missing entry:launchinfsection"

I have a 2nd hard drive that is recovered data from a
damage hard drive. There is a INF folder on that hard
drivebut no sr.inf file. There are sr note pad, sr.PNF,
srchasst, srchasst.PNF, srusbusd, srusbusd.PNF

I would appreciate some help with this.
thank you
Richard

Hi Richard,

The command-line parameter is case sensitive: Try this:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD
2. Click [Start] [Run]
3. Type the following command and press Enter
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"
[Case Sensitive]

System Restore core files should be reinstalled.

Alternately, you may also open Windows Explorer, navigate to
"C:\Windows\Inf" folder and right-click sr.inf (choose Install) (sr.inf
shows up as sr in windows explorer)
