System Restore & Auto Updates

System restore stopped working. I've read "Troubleshooting System Restore."
Not any help. I tried using "rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf" as suggested from reading other posts. I was able to
locate the two files it couldn't and it appeared to install. I try to turn
SR on but I get an error message telling me to reboot. I reboot and see that
both drives (hard drive and data backup drive) are being monitored. I reboot
and try to create a restore point but SR hangs. I am at a loss. I tired
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf" several
times but have had no luck.

If I can't get SR to install can I still download and install updates? I am
under the impression that SR creates a restore point before updates are
installed. With SR not working the updates hang in the initialization phase.

Any thoughts or other tricks?

Thanks.

If I am reading event viewer correctly, there are two line items listed.
First one "Hanging application rstrui.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000." Second one "Fault bucket
127291949." No other info is available.

rstrui.exe is the system restore executable so you're right about there
being something goofy with SR. The irony here is that a system restore
might actually fix this problem. :) Here's a post that may help -->

One of the respondents explains a few steps on how to reinstall SR and
provides some links that may be helpfull.

All I can suggest from here is that you do a repair install.

Go to System - System restore, and Disable it. Close and reboot. Now
have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and look for the folder System Volume Information
on each drive.

For NTFS drives you will need to take Ownership - that means a boot to
Safe Mode, hitting F8 as BIOS info goes to black, take the Administrator
logon. Look for the Folder, right click, Properties, and on the
Security page click Advanced. Owner Tab, select in the Change to panel
your regular account with Admin rights that you use for day to day
administration, check the 'Apply to sub-objects' and click Apply, OK
out. You will only ever need to do this once, and can reboot to carry
on in Normal logon.

You then open the folder and delete everything in it . Now reinstall
the Restore again, for safety, and reboot *before* trying to set it up.
I would also take the settings on drives and review the space allowed:
The default of 12% can be too much for its own good on a big drive - I
suggest 500 to 1000MB at most (200 is minimum, but does not hold many
points)
