System Protection error message

A month ago I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have been
having problems with restore points. They were last set up 5/7/2007 12:02:42
AM automatically but not this AM. When I tried to set them up manually by
clicking 'create' I got:
The restore point could not be created for the following reason: The
specified object was not found. (0x80042308) Please try again.

I tried deselecting the 3 partitions on my external drive but that resulted
in a warning that all previous restore points would be eliminated. I
disconnected the external drive and then was able to create a restore point
for my 'C' drive alone. I then rebooted with the external drive connected
and tried to 'create' again. It took 5 minutes by my clock for System
Protection to find the 4 partitions on 2 drives listed as 'Available Disks'
that I have selected to be protected by restore points.

1. Why so long? (Pentium D 940 3.2GHz 4 Gb RAM)?
2. Must I set up new restore points for all Available Disks 'OR ELSE'?
3. Why wasn't a set of restore points set up automatically this AM? The
system was on.

I needed to recover from an incorrect shut down yesterday and wanted to use
restore points but could not find them. I used my Vista disk to run a repair
session multiple times until my system finally returned to a normal boot
process.

NOTE: Just now after waiting the 5 minutes for System Properties|System
Protection|Create to find Available Disks I was able to make a new set of
restore points.

Additional information: My external drive is connected by LaCie high speed
FireWire 800.
