SYSTEM Process at 100% cpu usage

I have a presario laptop and this problem just started a week ago. I
noticed the cpu fan running constantly so I opened task manager to
check process resource usage. The process "service" is using all
available cpu time and I can no longer shutdown the computer through
software means. I must hold the power button to restart or shutdown.

What I've tried:

1. My first thought was a virus or spyware/malware. Ran virus/spyware
scanners = nothing notable found.
2. Closed all unnecessary processes = no change.
3. Boot to safe mode = no change.
4. In control panel, disable all nondetrimental devices and reboot = no
change.
5. Reformat and reinstall Win XP Pro, and all updates = nothing.
6. Tried a seperate harddrive I had on hand from an upgrade I did a
while back = nothing.
7. Searched MS knowledgebase for answers found nothing relevant. Did
find an article on battery problems/AC charger displaying similar bugs,
tried to run only on battery, then take out battery and run only
plugged into AC. No change.

ANYONE!!! Please help. I assume it's a hardware malfunction/problem but
can not find any answers.

Please be specific as to what anti malware software you used.

If you reformatted and reinstalled WinXP and you still
have this loop there must be a hardware problem.

It is way past the time for you to talk to HP about it.

Why don't you try HP.com, look up the knowledgebase there?? You can specify
the type and model of your machime, and you can find issues related to
certain models. Also, there's live chat available for tech support.

I own Compaq desktops and took care of a few problems thru their WEBsite. I
had my BIOS updated via the WEBsite after I found problems with hiberation,
and the knowledge base idenitified the solution as requiring a BIOS update.

As to the CPU going at 100%, I find it's usually one process eating it up,
and ending it solves the problem. For me, its's usually something running
wild in Nortons or AOL.
