system lagging

my system has been really lagging i have all the updated drivers on all of my hardware and a good graphics card. anytime i opne 2 programs at the same time my system really lags the programs i open i have opened before at the same time with no problem
p4 2.5 ghz
1gb ram
ati 9800 xt 256 mb video card
80gb 7200 rpm hd
