Has your Windows XP been updated to Service Pack 2 plus all of the
critical updates since then?

What antivirus software are you using? Is it completely up to date
with the virus definition files not more than a week old?

What antispyware software are you using? Is it completely up to date?

Is the Windows built-in firewall in operation on your computer, or do
you have a third-party firewall installed? If not, do you connect to
the Internet via a router that has NAT capability, which provides most
of the same protection as a firewall?

Have you gotten a "second opinion" recently by doing a free online
scan for possible viruses and spyware, such as are offered at the
following web sites:
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Try booting your computer into "Safe Mode with Networking" and then
going to one of the above free sites and scanning your computer. To
do this turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly just
as soon as the first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep
tapping until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and choose "Safe
Mode with Networking" from the menu.

Good luck

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Hope this helps.
