2. System does not come out of standby. The computer sounds like its coming
back up, but the screen remains black.

Clicking mouse starts computer (one hears hum, fan comes on),
but no amount of clicking brings the monitor back up, it remains black,
although the indicator light remains lit (yellow rather than green).
Must shut off via button on computer case.. Then restart.
Settings
Turn off screen/hard disk never
Standby after 20 min
Hibernate disabled (enable=unchecked)

This mean the Video Card is corrupt or damaged, your Hard Drive is going bad
and my advice BackUp your Data on Removable storage.
The screen saver does not work when you use a Wireless Optical Desktop mouse
on a Windows XP SP2-based computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895
Look in the event Viewer for error message and track it down to get the
culprit on this.
Scan your system form malware and Viruses, run a check Disk and run this
command:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need your XP CD for this procedure.
How much Disk space/RAM you have on this Machine?.

Boy, I have a hard time buying that the system is dying, it's a month old.
My C drive is 37.2G/ 23.4 is empty, also a 75G slave drive, 44.5 of which is
empty. There is 30G of video which 0I stuck there till I figure out what to
do with it.
Do I interpret your comment correctly to image that my difficulty stems from
the .avi files I stored on the slave drive, til I figured what to do with it.
This is the first DVD writer I've had, and I'm unsure how to put 30G onto
DVD. The DVDs I have are 4.7g.
I noticed in the "Windows for Dummies" book, the only comment I could find
about standby is a warning not to use it.
Thanks for your response. I'm a little long in the tooth to learn to use
much of this of this tech, still with help from others its fun to keep
seeking.

No, Not imaging nor cloning the Data, just BackUp them on a removable
Storage like CD/DVD, ZIp Floppy, External HDD..etc.
Try the diagnostic on the HDD and see if the HDD healthy or there are dirty
or damaged Cluster/Sectors on it.
Did you have a poke in the Event Viewer for any error messages (X).
Run the System File Checker to repair any damaged core system file will be
found on your system and see if any progress will happen.

I finally figured out where event viewer is. Now I need to know how to use
it. There's a whole list of error messages. I have a text file. How can I
decypher it?
Sourse Category Event? System? Or Application? Something called
LightScribeService none?
Where should I go with this stuff? By the way, Thaanks, I feel like I'm
headed right.
