System is very very slow after updates

Does anyone know why, after I just did a system update on
a Gateway XP home edition PC and it takes like 40 minutes
to boot up and like 20 to 25 minutes to launch a program.
I tried to disable the system restore and it will not let
me. The system times out. Does anyone have sometime of fix
or work around to maybe uninstall updates. The system can
basically do nothing.

you can go to add/remove software and remove the latest updates to see if
that brings back previous performance.
