System is being restarted ......

Ok, this problem has been going on for weeks now. I've tried other forums, my
motherboard manufacturer (who have yet to respond to me [the reason i
contacted them will be explained later]), no one has been able to help.

Ok, here is my problem. I really hope someone can help me out with this. Ok,
one day I noticed that my HDD was filled with garbage, it was running slow
and ZoneAlarm recently found and removed a trojan. So i figured it was time
to format. I had two HDD's plugged in a 40GB and a 160GB (the one XP was
installed on). So from this point on, let the 40GB HDD be known as HDD (B)
and the 160 (which i want XP installed on) as (A).

Ok, so I put the XP CD in the drive, restarted my computer and went from
there. I should have stopped as soon as I saw this, but when the installation
got to the point where it listed the HDD's I wanted to install XP on, it
showed HDD B (the one XP was on and wanted to re-install on) as drive D:
which was obviously not right. My D: drive, my spare HDD, HDD A, was now
being recognized as drive C: and my 160, B, was showing as D:. So, I chose
the 160 (drive D: ) which was a stupid mistake and I have no Idea why I did
that, but anyway, XP installed perfectly, but when I checked, XP was
installed on the D: drive.

I figured, Windows being installed on the D: drive wouldnt be good, so I
unplugged my spare HDD (the 40Gb which was now being recognized as C: ) and
began to reinstall XP again. This time, only with the 160GB HDD plugged in.
So, I formated that and installed XP.

The problem is when it gets to the graphical part of the Windows
installation. At the last part, with about 9 minutes remaining in the
installation, where it says its "Saving Settings" or whatever, my computer
suddenly restarts. The Windows boot screen shows, you know, with the moving
blue bar thing, but then, before the setup continues, to create the user
accounts etc, a blue screen (like the one that appears when your HDD is being
checked for errors if you suddenly shut it down wrongly) and it says "System
is being restarted ..........."

It keeps repeating this over, and over and over again. I am stuck at this
point and cannot solve it for the life of me. I have tried everything,
running CHKDSK, re-installing AGAIN, letting it run through, resetting the
CMOS, deleting, fixing and rebuilding BootCFG, contacted Abit (i though it
was a motherboard issue because i replaced my PSU, and even tried installing
XP on a new HDD so i figure it cannot be the PSU or HDD so it must be the
motherboard and so I contacted them but they haven't responded yet.).
Everything. Nothing worked.

So I gave the computer to a couple of guys at one of my parents work places.
They were somehow able to install XP on the HDD, but every time you tried to
start windows, some blue screen would appear and the computer would restart.
I went into advanced options and stopped it from rebooting, but sorry, I
didn't write down that error code it gives and I cant really remember what it
was. It said something about stopping windows from running to prevent
damaging my computer or something like that.

I then tried to boot windows using the last known good configuration. BOOM!
It worked. However, when i was looking around i noticed that there were odd
folders and files everywhere. Not to mention Windows Update wasn't working.
So i figured hey, now that windows is working again, re-installing XP should
properly work. So, i put in the XP CD, and tried to re-install XP. Well, now
here I am, using a laptop and posting my problem...

I ran into the same thing again. With 9 minutes left, computer restarted and
when it rebooted it keeps giving me the "system is being restarted ......"
screen and the computer reboots and the installation restarts.

I should have just left the damn thing alone now that it was working. But
no, I had to go and goober with it some more. But i figured it wasn't good
that there was random folders of files on the C: drive and Windows update
wasn't working (only one update showed and it kept failing -- it was some IE
security update).

Does anyone know what this problem is? How do I fix this?

Thank you very much to anyone who can help me solve this issue.

Best Regards,
Brendon

If it's always restarting at the same point, it could be memory related. Try
running memtest86 ( http://www.memtest86.com/ ) to see if your RAM is working
correctly. It's a standalone program that runs from a bootable floppy/CD, you
don't need to have an operating system installed.

Hey, thanks for the reply. However, I just realized that I was typing it
incorrectly the entire time. What it is actually saying is "setup is being
restarted..." during the last part of the windows installation. Then restarts.

As for the RAM, I do not think that is the problem. Although, I will try
that anyway. The entire computer is not even a half a year old.

I will test the ram just to be safe. Although, do you know what could be
causing the setup to restart with about 9 minsutes left (the last part).

Thanks,
Best Regards,
Brendon
