System inage running at 100% CPU utilization

Hello,

I am stuck in a rut here. I heard that there is a HOTFIX for this one, but
I searched for quite some time last night and can not seem to find it, maybe
someone here can help?

The PC operates fine, however, once it is booted up, the system image in the
Task Manager runs at 100%. This results in other applications opening and
functioning much slower than they are suppose to.

I am looking forward to your input on this.

Thanx,
:)

Hi,
I am haveing the same problem especially with multi windows open. The
problem is intermittant. I have run AdAware and Norton a couple of times
with nothing out of the ordinary.
I notce most with IEsplorer, Firefox Browser, Poker.com all if multi pages.
This only started a couple of weeks ago. Most recent program added was SIMS2
Nightlife.
No chance your using a SONY VIAO like me??

I don't have "system image," listed in my running services.
What piece of software does it run?
I'd look in control panel, admin tools, services, highlight syste
image, right click on properties, set it to manual at start-up.
Then check for viruses, spyware, ect., especially if it comes back o
by itself when you re-boot.
Best,
Treema

Yes, I've just seen the broo-ha-ha about Firefox 1.5

It seems to have some CPU maxxing effects - ah well, back to Avant?

Hi Gerry,

I just did a quick non scientific test between IE and FF. I set TIF on
both to 20mbs. Opened the same web pages on each browser and monitored
CPU and Mem Usage.

* Firefox's use of physical and virtual memory is exceptionally
high.

FF used about 1/3 more Mem Usage. Not exceptionally high. MS Outlook
used just as much.

* CPU usage spikes to 100 percent (usually while loading a Web
page).

CPU was slightly higher in IE.

* The browser freezes up for seconds, minutes, or permanently.

No difference here.

* The browser won't launch until they remove an errant "firefox.exe"
process in Task Manager.

I have seen this in earlier versions of FF. But not in some time now.

* The browser crashes suddenly (usually while loading a Web page).

IE did crash during this experiment. FF did not.

* The initial launch of Firefox loads slower.

This is do to a very large browser history. Clearing the "Browsing
History" will fix the slow startup.
Long-title temporary startup unresponsiveness
http://www.mozilla.org/security/history-title.html

I suspect most abnormalities in IE and FF are do to some type of
virus/malware infection.

Gerry,
Thanks for the info on Firefox.
It seems to run well on my desktop with XP pro but I uninstalled it on the
laptop with the problems that has XP Home. I also uninstalled SIMS
Nightlife, Performed Disk Cleanup (deleting lots of stuff) and a complete
Disk Defrag. Right now seems to be running OK. I haven't tried doing a lot
at one time yet. The old Mozillia Browser ran fine for 2 years and I only
upgraded to Firefox after this all started. Anyway thanks for the info and
the help.

Hi Rob,

As I suspected, the problem pre-existed the install of FF.

Also glad to see you have the problem straighten out.

As you reinstall the removed apps, keep in eye on the system in case the
problem reappears.
It's also a good idea to create a restore point before installing any
new app.

Hi Rob,

There is no one tool out that can remove all known malware. Spybot is
just another tool that scans for and immunizes against malware. Another
I highly recommend is Spywareblaster. Click the link below for more tips
on virus and malware removal and prevention.

Well Bert,
It's like this. Same thing happened again with IExp. Seems like my browser
likes to slow everything up. I ran norton on the Doc and Settings folder and
Event Viewer showed about 8 things that it could not open. Most files were
of a NTuser.dat.log type Any suggestions anyone????

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Warning
and Error Reports over the last 2 days use and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Before running anti-spyware programmes in Safe Mode delete Temporary
Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of all TEMP folders and then your Recycle Bin.

After cleaning try HijackThis.

Install and run HijackThis:
Download HijackThis (Freeware)
http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.

Hope you can tell a common thread. I almost think there is a virus or
spyware Norton and Adaware can't detect that is taking system resources and
not releasing them. Because the computer is usually fine for the first 15
minutes or so.....

Your ideas??????

G

Guest

Yes it came back. The computer completely bogged down during Poker.com. As
I replied to Gerry it's almost like my system resources aren't being
released. I have nearly all the same programs on my home desktop and only
512 Ram and it is fast as can be. The laptop slowed down and I added RAM up
to 1G but no help. CPU is maxed when it goes into it's thing.

Any ideas accepted.

Would re-formatting help or if it is Virus related would the problem stick
around???

B

Bert Kinney

Hi Rob,

Does this only happen when on Poker.com?

Download and run Process Explorer. Look for the process that's taking up
all the CPU recourses. to the left, make note of the file name and post
it here. This will help narrow the search.
Sysinternals Freeware - Process Explorer
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

Adding RAM would not fix this problem.

You will also want to make sure the system is virus and malware free.
Here are some tip on Virus and Spyware removal and prevention:
