system hangs on checkdisk

My Toshiba Satellite laptop started acting up lately. It got real slow,
and had to restart when I tried to wake it up. It seems to be running fine
now, but when I tried to run a chksdsk and automatically fix (run upon
restart)the computer hung up on the step 3 of 3, it just stopped. I had to
turn it off and back on again to get it going, and it tried to re-run the
chkdsk. When I selected skip the chkdsk, it hung again. Then I restarted
the computer, and the windows boot options came up (windows is having
trouble do you want to start in safe mode yada yada). I tried going into
safe mode and it hung. The only way to get back into windows was to select
the last known working configuration. Does anyone know what could be going
on here? Why can't I run chkdsk? Why can't I get into safe mode?

I am running firewalls, anti spyware, and anti virus programs. Scans
reveal no problems there.

Any ideas?

TIA

Paul

I just tried it again and I mispoke earlier. This system doesn't hang, it
kinda loops. It reboots after completing the security check, step 3 of 3,
then it fails to laod, reboots again, and then I get the windows is having
problems screen. Checkdisk works in windows, and for what it's worth, the
summar screen says that there is no problem at the end of the chckdsk.

Hi Paul,
Your system may overheated from the length of checkdsk process and other
usages, what the status of your Fan is it working and cooling your CPU?.
Look in the Event viewer for any Error Messages for Hardwares/Softwares and
post them back here.

Three Steps to Disable this service on your Computer (You don't need to

1- Start up Quicken Program
= On the Edit menu, point to Options and select internet Options.

2- Right click My Computer and select Properties from the drop down list.
= Click on Hardware Tab, then click Device Manager.
= On the View Meu, click Show Hidden Devices.
= Expand the Non-Plug and play Drivers and locate the mrtRate Driver for
Quicken.
= Right click mrtRate and then click on Properties.
= Click the Driver Tab and click "STOP" under Current Status.
= Under Start Up in the Type Box, click to select "Disabled" and then Click
OK to confirm and Quit the Window.

Reboot your machine and see if the error will register with the Date and
time for Today.

3- Disable the mrtRate in the Registry; ( be carefull here editing the
registry the wrong way can damage your machine or render it useless! always
back up before doing any changes to it);

= Open Run Command type : regedit.exe or regedit32.exe click OK or Hit
Enter on your Keyboard.
On the Registry locate this KEY;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Current Control Set\Services\mrtRate.

=In the right pane while "mrtRate" Highlighted locate DWORD: Start and set

Thanks. I just uninstalled quiken, didn't even know it was there. I've
downloaded and installed visual C++. The computer is running well, but if
I run a chkdsk upon it still hangs and restarts. There is a short blip of
a blue screen that appears to say something about bios but it flashes so
fast I can't read it. Is there anyway I can see what that messege is?

Thanks.

Hi Paul,
Right Click MY Computer Icon on your Desktop and select Properties from the

On the System Properties window click on Advanced Tab.
Locate Startup and Recovery option and click on Settings Button.
On the Startup and Recovery window locate the System Failure Option and
uncheck this:
[ ] Automatically restart uncheck click OK to confirm and OK on the
System Properties window to close it.
Reboot and try to run the CHKDSK utility, if the error appeared you will
have the chance to read it or you will see in the Event Viewer log file, how
to access this, go to the Start >> Control Panel >> Performance and
Maintenance option >> Administrator Tools and Double click on Eveent Viewer
and see the Error message.

Try to RUN the command: sfc /scannow note the space between "SFC" and
"/" to run correct on the Run Command, get your XP CD handy you may be asked
to put in for the system to repair any corrupt or damaged files.
Out of interest how long you have your Computer, if longer than three years
you may need to change the battery.
Also is your Computer Clean from Malwares and Viruses, the cause could be
caused by a Boot sector virus on your computer.
Be sure and Run scan to be certain your machine is Virus free.

Hey Nass,

I've run all my anti-virus and spyware programs and found nothing. I ran
the sfc scan program and found nothing as well.

When I try to start up in safe mode, the system seems to hang on the
mup.sys command. Now this appears to be a relatively common problem
judging form the number of post I've found. I've not found any solutions
for this problem however.

Again, I want to be clear. The computer is running fine, it does turn
off and restart without problems. The only time I have a problem is if I
try to run the chkdsk on start up. I just don't know if this portends
problems to come or not. Doesn anyone know anything about this
"mup.sys"?

Thanks,

Paul.
